Poker bonuses (often referred to as Poker Sign-up Bonuses or Poker Site New Player Bonuses) are an incentive that online poker rooms give out to new players who join their site to play poker on there. Think of it as a welcome bonus, which the poker site uses as a means of attracting new players to try out their poker software and online poker rooms. The aim is to get new players to join their site, deposit some money to play real-money poker games (as opposed to play-money poker games).

Usually there is some sort of requirement from the poker site in order to receive this bonus money. This requirement is typically to play a certain number of hands before the bonus is released in full. Sometimes the bonus is split up and released in chunks, up to the maximum amount of the bonus on offer.

e.g. A bonus can be for 100% matched bonus up to $500, released in $100 increments for every 1000 raked hands played.

This means that the poker site will give you a bonus, matched to what your first deposit is, up to a maximum of $500. If you deposit $50, their bonus to you will be the same which is $50. If you deposit $250, then their bonus is $250 also. This is true for all deposit values from the minimum deposit requirement (usually around $20 or so for most poker sites) up to the $500 bonus amount in this case.

If you deposit $800 in, then they will only match up to $500 so the bonus-value-to-first-deposit-amount ratio is not as favourable. Deposit too little and although the bonus-value-to-first-deposit-amount ratio is good, you're not taking full advantage of the bonus available on offer. Deposit too much and you lose value. For that reason, we always recommend that you deposit between the minimum amount and the maximum amount you would need in order to get the maximum bonus on offer.
